Saddened by EU decision to restart the Strategic-Pact talks with Russia
I am discouraged by the EU for reopening Strategic-Pact talks with Russia because the former Soviet Union is at a tender formative point in its re-emergence as a global power where it can still be reprimanded by a less aggressive power group. The time is coming very quickly when Russia will once again not have to make decisions based on the needs of the countries around it.I would like to state for the record, that I do not think that the EU should ignore Russia by not having any diplomatic contact.. Rather, the EU should not discuss increased integration but the Russian aggression that has occurred against potential member states of the EU. Russia is clearly signaling its re-emergence as a dominant player on the global scene. The joint military maneuvers in Latin America, Medvedev’s planned trip to Venezuala, Cuba and Brazil, and the movement of missiles in Europe all illuminate this fact. Historically speaking, they have been a cruel global power. Say what you will about Guantanamo Bay, the USA has never had a gulag archipelago like the horrors described by Solzhenitsyn. The EU has shown itself to be weak by reopening Strategic-Pact talks with Russia before Russia fully complied In good faith with the cease-fire that Sarkozy brokered. How can Russia be trusted on an economic and humanitarian level until it lives up to its military agreements? There are parallels to appeasement that occurred before WWII. Russia is seeing how far it can push before others push back.
